The start of a consensus on wxtwt that there may be a chill starting late January. While the models have enough uncertainty, the trends make it likely.

Locally we’ve been around 5-10degC warmer than the climate normals for fall and winter; we’ll see if the wxtwt peeps are right.

At the casa del sømand in winter the average cost per degree Celsius is around 10$/month. So if it’s warmer than 10degC it’s 100$ not being spent. Useful in the high inflation situation we’re in.

Cassette tapes

I rabbit holed on Dolby, Type I–IV, and other analog shenanigans involving cassette tapes today. There is so much I should have known back in the heyday that I didn't that would have provided crazy audio quality — that unfortunately was unknown to me.

Like why tapes have high bias vs normal, 70µS vs 150µS and the impact of all the formulations. Sadly, no Time Machine exists.

Would I want to go back to carrying a bazillion tapes compared to my library on my iPhone? No. Am I going to eBay along for 30$ type iv metal tapes? No.

Like when I gave away my film cameras, I'll move along the progress curve, and not retrograde.

That said, it was very cool what they could do with what they had!
